Piri Reis University is named after the famous Ottoman navigator and cartographer Piri Reis, who lived between the 15th and 16th centuries. It is the only university in Turkey specializing in marine science, engineering and related disciplines, continuing Piri Reis’ legacy of seafaring and navigation. In addition to maritime disciplines, the university offers education in five faculties, a professional school and a postgraduate institute. The university has a state-of-the-art maritime simulation center where operations can be performed on more than 50 types of vessels in 80 geographical regions, as well as on four different types of machinery. In addition, the university has the PRÜ Teknopark, which serves as a center for innovation and collaboration between academia and industry. The technopark promotes technology transfer, supports start-ups and develops research projects that meet the needs of the maritime and engineering sectors. One of the advantages of PRÜ Teknopark is its proximity to İstanbul Technopark, which allows students and researchers to work closely with industrial partners and work on real projects, gaining valuable practical training.
The Center for Applied and Continuing Education at Piri Reis University (PÜSEM) actively promotes the development of professionals in the maritime field and other industries. As part of its mission, the center organizes continuing education and training courses for both university students and current professionals, including naval officers.
In addition, Piri Reis University cooperates with European universities through the Erasmus+ exchange program, giving its students the opportunity to gain international experience and broaden their professional horizons.
Piri Reis University emphasizes its commitment to quality education and compliance with international standards. For example, the university’s English preparatory school is accredited by the international organization Eaquals, which demonstrates high standards in aspects such as management, quality assurance, teaching and student services. This accreditation emphasizes the university’s commitment to maintaining a high level of education and strengthening its international reputation.
Piri Reis University is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility by opening an eco-friendlyGreen Campus in Tuzla on the Marmara Sea coast. The campus, located on a 30-acre site with approximately 60,000 m² of indoor teaching space, opened in November 2013. In addition to emphasizing the environment, the university actively supports the development of various sports. Sports activities at the university are aimed at developing students’ skills and abilities, providing quality recreational opportunities and promoting physical health. Examples of sports teams include basketball, volleyball, soccer, swimming, water polo and karate.
Although the university does not have its own residence halls, students typically live close to campus, providing convenient access to social activities and academic events. The university also provides assistance in finding suitable housing to ensure a comfortable living environment for its students.
